The school is located on the ground floor of a new building and has in use for one year. On the ground floor, accessed through another door, there is a church and a day centre for elderly people. These centres are used two afternoons a week and some saturdays by children between 3 to 5 years of age with staff from outside the school. This centre is independent from the nursery school. The kitchen of the elderly day centre also cooks for the children in the school. The school is state founded and the school day is from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. The families pay 200 € a month. Groups: Catering for children from 1 to 6 years of age. There are four groups. The minimum age of the children is 14 months. The maximum capacity is 25 children, 25 children in the morning and another different 25 in the afternoon. In the afternoon usually there are less children and they don't reach the maximum number. One group
is of 12 children from 1 to 3 years of age with, a teacher and two nursery
nurses. Timetable: Very flexible of six or seven hours. The children can go at 11 a.m. and leave at 8 p.m. The afternoon groups are mixed with children from 1 to 6 years of age. A typical day could be: children start arriving at the centre from 6 am, some will go to bed, some will play o watch television, after having had breakfast they go out into the garden and start the more structured activities after 9 a.m. One teacher
starts working at 6 o'clock, two at 7 and the rest at 8 a.m. The pre-school children, 6 to 7 years of age, go to school for four hours. This is free, but if they need to stay more hours in the centre there is a charge. On Saturdays
they open as long as they have more than two children. Pedagogical Method: All the small children's needs are catered for. In the first few days there is a "training" period to adapt the children to the school until they get used to being on their own in the school. There are
specialised teachers in music, specifically in piano. The ambience of the centre is very relaxing. We were there the day that they were celebrating Carnival, they were all dressed up with costumes, the classrooms were decorated accordingly with balloons and streamers. Some of the teachers were dressed up too. The spaces are open and very luminous, the materials are very warm, with sofas, beech wood chairs, cheerful fabrics, wooden toys and tasteful paintings displayed in the rooms. The school is open from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. |
